That’s always a tough thing. One of the first things I would do is contact an employment lawyer, and pay for a consultation, and try to figure out what’s going on. Run your set of circumstances by the attorney and either he or she can evaluate it and let you know whether what you’re experiencing is age discrimination, or something else, or merits further investigation.

Another thing you should do perhaps in consultation with your lawyer, or if you decide, “I really don’t want to hire a lawyer right now,” then if you believe that there’s age discrimination, you should contact HR, or your supervisor, or whoever your employer has directed you should contact for these sorts of things, and very plainly say, “I believe that what is happening to me,” and describe whatever it is that is happening to you, “Is the result of discrimination based on my age.” You need to say it that plainly, “Based on my age,” or, “Because of my age.”

Because you want to have a clear record that you have made that complaint and that your complaint was not just that, “Well, my supervisor doesn’t like me,” or, “My new boss doesn’t like me.” But that, “They’re discriminating against me because of my age.” That will do two things. One is that will hopefully give the employer the basis to investigate your report and correct the behavior. At the same time, it will also protect you because complaining about age discrimination is protected activity that if you suffer an adverse reaction because you complained, then you’ll be protected.
